What does ECP stand for? What does it mean?

ECP Therapy is short for External Counter Pulsation Therapy, ECP therapy is a heart treatment that is noninvasive and does not require needles, medication, or incisions. The entire process is administered outside and external of your body. The treatment runs in “counter” synchronization with your heartbeat and therefore is individualized with each patient. Finally, this treatment involves “pulsation” of large blood pressure cuffs around your legs and hips. They inflate and deflate to help the circulation of your blood from your heart to your body and back.

What should I expect if I receive ECP Therapy?

During an ECP Therapy session, you will lay on a comfortable bed for your heart treatment. Our trained staff will place large pneumatic cuffs, similar to the blood pressure cuffs doctors use, and wrap them around your hips, thighs, and calves. Small hoses are connected to these cuffs, leading to a compression system just underneath the bed. To monitor your heart and to help the system function properly, you will also be connected to an EKG monitor and an SPO2 monitor on your left pointer finger. Once you are comfortable and we have answered any last-minute questions, your alternative heart therapy will begin.

The cuffs will start to inflate and deflate in sequence, timed to occur in rhythm with your heartbeat. When the heart is at rest, diastolic phase, the cuffs will inflate. During the heart pumps, the systolic phase, the cuffs will deflate. This treatment goes on for about an hour throughout your treatment. During this time, you will lay comfortable on the bed in the privacy of your own room. Throughout the procedure you can watch TV, listen to music, and some patients even take a nap. While the experience may take a few moments to get used to, many patients report no discomfort what so ever. Our staff will remain with you until you are comfortable laying there and you can call for them anytime if you have any concerns.
